A fast little DSLR worth your consideration.
You will doubtlessly read a lot of reviews of this camera that are rather dismissive of its look, feel, and feature set. And while I cannot defend the shortage of a rubberized handgrip... spend any amount of time with this camera and you will find it simple, yet competent brief DSLR which gets the most important thing right. The camera has a glossy plastic achieve which doesn't exactly exude quality or make it feel like a high-end camera. But structure on this camera is very tight. The plastic is light-weight but its not flimsy like you would expect. There is no rubberized handgrip, which I believe was a mistake to omit this on this camera. Especially since its predecessor (and its competitors) have them. Outside of that, the hand feeling is a very nice size. The one upshot to the lightweight plastic is that the camera feel very light with the kit lens unavailable. One thing you have to watch out for is that the camera feels very out of balance when attaching a heavier lens...

I about the camera is an amazing buy for the money. I was able to unpack the contents & begin shooting rectitude pictures IMMEDIATELY, using the fully automatic settings & the included partially charged battery-operated. Nikon D3100 VS. D300 VS. D700
For the set someone back of this camera, I don't think you can get anything better. The low light performance is off the charts. As a wedding photographer I regularly run with Nikon's high end professional equipment and I was amazed how close this camera is to a pro camera. Now let me get identified with. In order to compare I took a look at 100% files out of each camera I own.Which camera excels Nikon D3100($Tatty) VS. D300($1600) VS. D700 ($2,700):* Lens = The D3100 is the only camera that comes with a lens at it's normal fee* ISO Performance = Tie between D3100 and D700! (It could be Nikon's new processing but the JPEG looks fantastic I was shooting D3100 on 6400iso with very ungenerous noise at all)* Low Light Focusing = D700* Focus Speed = D700* External Buttons & Wheel for Pros = D700* Menu Navigation = D3100* Ease of Use = D3100* Megapixel = D3100 (14.2)* Sensor bulk = D700 (Much more important than megapixels but I won't get...
    D70 Upgrade
I recently updated my DSLR accumulation to the Nikon D3100 from the Nikon D70. There are good reviews out there that you should check out. However, I would like to interest some of my first impressions.Pro:-Better image quality and lower noise at high ISO with the D3100-MUCH MUCH lighter, which will be slight when traveling-Larger LCD screen-11 focus points, including 3D focus which tracks the gesture of the subject or camera.-1080p Video-14 megapixels-2nd Generation DSLR-Quiet, mild, quietCons:-No bracketing option. Not a huge deal since I only bracket once a year-Cannot use my old 50mm 1.8 lens. I knew this before purchasing the camera.-As of 10/1/2010, Camera RAW for the D3100 is not supported in Photoshop or Lightroom. Distress to shoot .jpg + RAW or use Nikon Capture NX2 for RAW files. That should be updated soon, so not a big deal.-Can hear the lens focusing when recording video.-No intensively...
Takes A number pictures and gets out of the way while doing it
This Nikon D3100 is a unprecedented deal for non professionals, the rest of us people that want to take family and travel shots. I've owned DSLRs since 2004, starting with a Nikon D70 and then effective to D40, D200 and and . Those are all excellent cameras, but this Nikon D3100 is better than all of those in one crucial enclosure, the area that matters: it takes excellent pictures without having to fiddle with the settings between shots. Yes, the other cameras are less ill in other respects: They have more buttons to change settings...

A true starter camera if you want better pics than a point and shoot.
Like many other reviewers I am not a masterful photographer, and this is my first digital camera. I do like taking pictures though and I've dealt with a few nice film cameras and some sharp Fujifilm cameras (a P&S, 'bridge camera' and a DSLR) and I feel like this camera is most absolutely worth the price. The X500 is a bridge camera, almost a SLR and almost a point and shoot. But it boasts some grand specs and features that you cannot find anywhere in this price range.Pros. The 16 megapixel sensor is gigantic. Most entry level cameras of any type and brand start off at about 12 MP right now. GE has this exemplar at 16. I think the other 16 MP cameras are over twice the price of this one. You can see the difference when you zoom in on your computer, the comprehensibility is apparent. The zoom on the X500 is awesome. This camera has 15X optical zoom and along with digital zoom (digital zoom takes somewhere else image quality as you zoom in so just keep that in mind when using it) it has a...
    Peculiar Bridge Camera ^-^
Like most residents who are purchasing this camera, I have little or no experience in photography. Although I've dabbled in the arts of Skype and nimble pics using my phone, this GE bridge camera is hardly in the same tier. So many features.. so not enough time..Pros:> Superb picture quality for the price> Myriad of features overloaded in one> Super ZOOM to the rescue!> Build quality feels legit (ergo, a heartfelt, solid camera rather than a cheap toy)I'll go more in depth with the features. My favorite feature is the HDR conversion of photos. After you take a photo, you go to the photo you even-handed took by hitting the > (play) button. Then hit menu and go all the way down. There's an option called "HDR" which converts your photo to "Euphoric Dynamic Range" quality. Simply put, it enhances the colors of the photo, making it brighter and more glowing. Another great feature is smile detection. Press the little smiling button to be fair next to the "waving hand" (that's image...
Look at along with Tips for your new GE x500
Rehashing: My last two digital cameras have been point & shoot Kodak's and it took so long for the camera to reset in between pictures I was missing at once after shot. Plus, the Kodak's didn't have any kind of picture stabilization so half the pictures came out hazy. With that said, I was in the market for a different brand of camera.I was considering the Nikon L120 but very didn't want to shell out that kind of money so I kept putting the purchase off. Then I came across this GE x500 with its bibliography of equally good features, great reviews and incredible price. I didn't even be informed GE made cameras so I have to say I was a bit leery about how good it would be compared to SLR style cameras with name recognition but I went for it and it has ended up being the made-to-order camera for my picture taking needs (vacations, special occasions, holidays, parties, pets, supplementary on line classified ad or auction).TIPS: I haven't had the camera that long and with all the...

    Marvellous Starter Camera
Looking over several cameras and choosing one for someone who has outgrown point up and shoots, I came back to the Nikon D3000. By no means will this model blow away the inured photographer, however it does cover the basics and more. We picked it up and tried it out over the weekend.First time DSLR users will charge out of the Guide Mode. It literally walked us through different shoot scenarios via the fixed 3" LCD shelter. An excellent tool, its step by step instructions allowed my niece to move from the operating leaflet in no time. After a few more runs, I am sure that she will feel quite comfortable shooting in the manual vogue. The quick shutter release was a nice surprise.Upon completing two days of shooting with the Nikon D3000, I walked to another place impressed. In manual mode, indoor shots were a balanced and perfect mix of shadow and redden. As usual with shooting in low light, noise will make an appearance. However this system can be tweaked to deliver some distinguished...
    Not counting first DSLR
My healthy old point-and-shoot camera (one of the Canon PowerShot series) had served me faithfully, but I was rising frustrated with its limitations. It seemed SO slow -- I was always missing great shots of my kids. The low-unsubstantial performance was not particularly good. And I knew if I ever wanted to take more than basic family snapshots, I was succeeding to need to bite the bullet and buy a DSLR. But they seemed so intimidating! After doing a ton of research online and irritating out my sister-in-law's slightly older Nikon D40, I settled on the new D3000. And I love it! It remarkably is easier to use than I could've imagined, and the shots I've gotten so far are amazing. I have no photographic training, but I am really enchant with the pictures I've been getting so far. I never could have imagined there would be SUCH a huge difference. I've actually gotten -sharp- pictures of my toddler in change, rather than just kid-shaped blurs! I took it to a local park last night for a couple hours...
Wonderful user friendly beginner camera with great AF system and image quality
Nikon D3000 is Nikon novice / entry level camera. It replaces Nikon D60. There are three major upgrade of D3000 from D60. There are 11 Sports car focus system with dynamic tracking and 3D tracking. This AF system is the same as Nikon mid-range/enthusiast camera, D90. Also, the LCD home screen has been enlarged to 3 inches from 2.5 inches. However, the screen resolution remains the same at 230,000 dots. Also new is the Mentor mode, this new mode is working as your tutor on basic photography. It helps you set up your camera, in the same heyday, it tells you about basic photography setting and concepts. Other than that, everything looks the same, buttons, placement, viewfinder and ikon quality/resolution.It is an average size for beginner DSLR camera. But if you are coming from terse camera, you might a bit surprise of the size. On the other hand, if you are coming from advanced DSLR cameras, then you will undergo this camera is compact and light.Nikon D3000 has a thumb dial,...

Natural knowledge for photographers of all levels.
Don't let the label put you off. The word "Dummies" might cause some folks to look elsewhere without even considering the content. I got started delightful photos with a large Graflex press camera that used film plates (like you see the Squeeze guys using in the old black and white movies) and have done my share of photography over the years. With the development of digital cameras, and especially the more recent high end DSLR models, there's whole new realm of information to gaffer. Whether you're a seasoned photographer graduating from film (remember film?) to a new digital SLR monster, or someone having their first experience with a question and shoot digital camera, this book will have a wealth of knowledge to help you enjoy your visual passion.

    digital slr?

I'm more of a newbie to cameras, but not as much as some. I have several point and shoot cameras, no digital slr's.

what brand, make or example do you suggest to purchase, and why? I'm looking in the maximum of $700 before tax range.

Let me keep from you sort out the monotony that comes with buying a DSLR.

Someone suggested the Sony Alpha or the Pentax K100D, citing the in-camera jarring reduction. This would be a plus, but is really only a selling point. In truth,

    Digital SLR?

I'm prospering to be looking for a digital SLR soon. Price is not a concern (within reason of coarse).
What are some good recommendations? I would be inclined to stay away from Nikon (I really don't like them), and I learn more towards Canon.

It's wholly all right if you don't like Nikon - I think Nikon made a pretty good camera but I contemplate since you have already in the Canon camp, might as well as stick in it. Well, you probably won't be able to port your existing camera's garnishes
