Well, I have had this camcorder now for a week and tested it in many lighting situations and locations and I must say I'm very impressed. Casing filming my niece and dogs in the yard the videos are crisp viewed on my 40" Sony HD LCD TV. I would give it a 5 out of 5. In my eyes, looks programme quality. Don't obey to the negative comments. People always have something to complain about and their own preferences. However, this Camcorder has the lowest lux rating I've seen. I have the Canon HF M41. A viewfinder is a must have for me. I looked at more up-market camcorders. They all have their strong points, but for me, getting good footage in low light is the first priority. All those gratifyingly features the other brands have are great but not a must have. The low light of this camcorder is nothing short of Amazing. It has the same sensor as the XF105, a $4300 practised camcorder, . If someone tells you the difference is small and not a big deal, don't believe them. The video grandeur is superb, as is ease of use. Here are a few hints and things I noticed. The battery out of the box will not power-on the camera and requirements some minutes of charge to even show 0%. You can operate the camera from the charger but the battery is not being charged, says the vade-mecum.There are two 1920x1080 picture quality modes: MXP at 24 mbps and FXP at 17 mbps -- and three at 1440x1080: XP+, SP and LP, at 12, 7 and 5 mbs, each to each. I believe it defaults to LP out of the box, which is 1440x1080 at 7 mbps. I suggest you select FXP to get true 1920x1080 result. Upping to 24 mbps might be a good idea only if you are going to do a lot of post editing -- I can't see an rehabilitation over FXP. Recording times with a 16GB card are 1:25, 2:05, 2:50, 4:45 and 6:05, respectively.When the camera is OFF, pressing the DISP handle (on the camera body) will show battery capacity in minutes and percent. Pressing DISP when ON turns the LCD to max jollity...

I have need of a HD camcorder for my new born baby, but with a limited budget. So I compared canon HF200, Sony CX100 and Panasonic TM20R since they are all in sub 600 reach. I tried all of them in local stores and finally settled with canon HF200, although it's a little bit more expensive than cx100 and TM20R.The sensor of HF200 is the prime one among these three, 1 /4" (1/5" for CX100, 1/6" for TM20R). It guaranteed best resolution, 2.99 Megapixels ( 2.3 M for cx100, 1.14M for TM20R) and in my experience larger sensor also helps tone down the noise in dark environment. Indeed, minimal illumination condition for HF200 is 0.4 lux, much punter than thre other two. I took a couple of sample shots in local stores and the picture from HF200 for mysterious environment is acceptable. Sony cx100 is barely acceptable and Panasonic TM20R is total crap, not even as commendable as my webcam.After I finally bought HF200, I never regretted! The video quality is just brilliant. I'm usually more of a still photographer at heart, but I finally decided to purchase an HD video camera, and after considerable scrutinize, I chose the Canon HF-S200. It seemed to have the right mix of features, size, price and quality - and so far, it's measured up.From an ergonomics aspect of view, I found the camera about right for my hands. The controls seem logically laid out, and it fits actually in my hand in a way that lets me hold it steady without feeling awkward. Still, even though the camera is barely a pen in weight, to get the best HD quality, you'll want to consider a monopod, tripod or some other support. I use a Kirk pitch in harness borrowed from one of my still cameras, and it works well. Otherwise, the controls seem to be where I'd like them and it took fairly particle effort to get to the point where I could operate most of the features without fixating on the camera itself. One handle breaker for me
I'm flourishing to keep this short. Other reviewers have pointed out the many great things about this camcorder, and there are many. Unfortunately, there is one deal breaker for me, and I'm to be sure ' shocked that more people haven't mentioned it.....the lens is not wide angle enough!! I bought this a week ago to take on vacation. I am in Orlando righteous now doing the Disney thing, and I'm in a big suite, and I am constantly backing up, and telling my kids to back up, so I can get them in the painting. I bought the Vixia H S200 based on the many wholesome reviews and the top rating on cNet. It is a great all around camcorder no doubt with fabulous image and video distinction. It ranks at the top of what's out there today in the prosumer or near-prosumer category. I purchased my Canon Vixia M31 several weeks ago and was fatigued to it because it records in HD and has a 32 GB built in memory. It's really that good and that fun to use.Not only does it curve out 1080 footage, it really captures in 1080. It doesn't capture in some lesser boldness and upconverts like Canon's R series. Adjusting the speed of zooming in and out is unoppressive with the zoom lever on top of the camcorder. It's designed like those on most camcorders.And the sound!
