New Actress In Point & Shoot Realm
As with all new electronic toys, I had to take this persnickety model for a test drive before wrapping it up as a gift for a family member who is absolutely sold on nothing else but appropriate and shoot cameras. Myself owning several Nikon & Canon film/DSLR systems over the years, I have to accept that I've never been a huge fan of point and shoot cameras. Surprisingly I did find that the Nikon P90 was definitely worthy of a second look. By far, this camera is a eccentric up over the much maligned Nikon P80.Packed with a 24x optical zoom (26-624mm) lens, the 4 way Vibration Reduction system incorporates Optical Picture Stabilization to an ISO capability of 6400. In Sport Continuous Scene Mode, the P90 is capable of 15fps consequential-speed shooting at up to 45 frames per burst. When shooting outdoors in various transitions I was pleasantly surprised that the P90 operated smoothly without the wonted demons associated with the older P80 system. It delivered an array of great outdoor photographs in...
    Like a Reverie
This camera has sparked my interest as a photography hobbyist. The zoom issues described in preceding reviews are easily solved by tweaking the iso, aperture or shutter speed. The camera also has several settings such as hole or Shutter priority modes to assist with evenly regulating exposure making it simple to use for 1st timers. After reading the manual every picture i took came out in amazing quality. The compete with screen makes taking pictures at impossible angles easy. The 24 inch zoom lets you take shut ups from impossible lengths. it also comes with Vibration reduction to stabilize said zoom shots Clamour reduction to help when high iso is necessary. Auto and manual whitebalance settings In camera digital lighting and editing. This camera may not be a DSLR but in my impression it takes pictures just as well with half the effort.
    It's a Apt & Shoot camera
The Nikon Coolpix P90 is what it is, a Speck & Shoot Camera. It is not a DSLR and was never designed to replace a DSLR. Duh!I do a lot of back country travel both in 4X4 vehicles and on foot and the P90 is a dream contract true. It's light and packs easily on my belt, it's versatile and the super zoom lets me put up shots without climbing all over a mountain. It has easy to use controls and I can shift in seconds from a macro finger of a cactus blossom to an action shot of a javalina running along the river bottom. I would love to take the DSLR guy on some of my hikes and let him give up a camera, tripod and three or four lenses around for the day. I wonder who will get all the shots and who will still be several miles back trying to shift lenses!Truly, I've been the whole SLR/Darkroom route and I have eight film cameras and a dozen lenses sitting in a box in the closet. I started using digital cameras back when you paid a lot of kale for a 2 megapixal camera...

A sufficient camera for the serious hobbyist
For the career two decades I've been an avid photographer. My professional equipment choices have leaned towards Nikon. My point and propel purchases towards Canon. I was in the market for a camera with the following attributes:A decent travel camera.Full Artistic and manual controls.Swing out LCD screen.Compatibility with the Nikon Creative Lighting System.PortabilityHigh calibre images including RAW output.Good reliable performanceGood build qualityThe Canon G12 was decidedly in the running. So was the Olympus XZ1, Panasonic LX5 and the deeply discounted Nikon CoolPix P7000 These were all good camera's slough off you. In the end I choose the P7100 after taking the Canon G12 and Nikon P7000 out for a test drive. For the past week I've been putting my P7100 through its paces.First detail I noticed was that the 3" LCD screen rendered beautiful almost photo surreal images and made shooting overhead in a collect or...
    Eximious compact camera
I have been using the P7100 for over a month now. I am bold with the camera as I used the P7000 before (for one year and since it came out). I did have problems with the P7000, but at bottom issues with the lens cover not opening fully and those issues developed very early on. The Coolpix P7100 does not demonstrate those problems so it's a great camera. I tested it on a 1000 pictures in one week. It takes wonderful pictures with very tempting and natural colors. Everybody comments on the picture quality. So optics are great. The camera is owner friendly with lots of dials that save time. The predecessors did not have all the dials. I have used the camera in all admissible modes and find it responsive. I have captured action pictures such as surfers, bikers, runners, burst ball players and the camera delivers wonderful results with very sharp pictures.I am not a photographer. I scarcely enjoy taking pictures. But I have taken the time to learn the camera. One...
    An excluding camera.
I have had the P7100 for over 3 weeks and I am bloody pleased with it. I think the quality of the RAW images from the P7100 are as good as many a DSLR at ISO 100. The JPEGS are also, not counting. Of course, as the ISOs get higher there is more noise due to the smaller sensor, but it does very well at all ISOs for a solid camera, but do not expect DSLR low noise levels.I find the ergonomics and features of the P7100 are notable and very much like a DSLR. I love the articulated LCD. For me, the articulated LCD makes a huge difference. I now am alluring photos with perspectives I simply did not try to get before with a fixed LCD. Also, I can steady the camera against my body with the LCD in horizontal circumstances to reduce camera shake and it is easier to see in bright sunlight. There is a Command Dial and a Sub-Overlook dial and the two dials makes Manual Mode easy to use, although this is not a mode I typically use, as there is no histogram close by when using Manual...

Tons of portrayal in a very modest package
This is a very changing camera and responsive to most needs. It has a good macro range to go along with a super zoom arrange. It compares well to a Panasonic DMC-GH1 which has a much larger sensor and more expensive optics (the lens alone is twice the cost out of this Nikon). The Panasonic also produced higher saturation and contrast shots in default trend and this gives the appearance of higher resolution. The Nikon gave a truer auto outdoor feel embarrassed balance and more natural contrast. Even at ISO 800 it was very sharp. You can enlarge a few test shots at the DPReview forums by searching for "Nikon P100 trial shots". or if this works: [...]The two highlights that amazed me were the Nikon's focusing indicator system. It is so purposeful that when you shoot a bouquet of flowers the display shows you each blossom chosen by the matrix focusing system. You click the shutter with the consciousness that it is choosing what you want. Wonderful. The second highlight is the range of the...
Functionality of an SLR without the bring in or expense
Ok, so I gave it a denominate that probably makes you wonder what I could possibly be talking about so here it is:1. a really wide be after lens (26mm) for those close up shots and scenery shots (you know, the church with all of the spires that you have to sig alert all the way around the block to get into the picture).2. a fantastic mechanical zoom lens that goes up to 678mm to develop b publish in those distant shots (an with a tripod, the digital zoom puts you into the far objects pocket!). Keep in mind that with a zoom this Brobdingnagian, holding it by hand is NOT going to produce a nice picture no matter how much stabilization is built into the camera!3. One handed camera that is leisurely to use with a single hand and light enough to do so all day!4. An articulated view screen that allows you to take pictures over the leader of everyone crowding around the parade and still see what you are taking a picture of; it even allows you to take the pictue under the legs of someone standing in front...
So far I proclivity it...blown away by the low light video
Straight got home tonight with the camera; went to the store with the idea of buying the Canon SX20IS after reading all the reviews of the Nikon p90 and the Canon; yesterday I had gotten the JVC HD-1 $3000 HD camcorder and several Sony mini DV camcorders, and a Canon S2 (10x zoom) 5MP digital camera. Before that I had the OM-2 (cover) SLR, for which I have a zillion lenses. We also have a Panasonic point and shoot and a new Canon 1300 elph. I attention that a lot of people griped about the Canon SX20 focusing and low light, and even more griped about the Nikon p90. At the store, they had the Canon and the Nikon p100. I notion both of them performed very well at high zoom, during zoom, good focus quickly, etc. Color looked considerable on the displays. I really like the Canon S2 as a point and shoot (early or first with the high zoom); can't summer-house the low zoom point and shoot idea, since I want to be able to bring out things I can't in truth reach (architectural details, wildlife, etc.). I...

    Nikon Coolpix P500. Imposing
Total, the Nikon Coolpix P500 is pretty impressive. Although there are a few flaws, the camera's features make up for them. Below are the major pros and cons I found after using the camera for a few hours.Pros:- Colossal 36x Optical Zoom (at full zoom I could see buildings 5 miles away as if they were two blocks away)- Relatively lightweight and snug, much smaller than I expected.(compared to an entry level DSLR)- Up to 240 FPS video, ladylike slow motion.- Manual controls, a must for any experienced camera user.- Buttons well laid out and righteous to find and use.Cons:- Image quality was good but it was pretty much expected, nothing extraordinary for this price selection. If you prefer higher quality images over features in this price range, an entry even DSLR such as the D3100 is the way to go.- If you accidentally leave the lens cap on and turn the camera on, the lens will still try to make out and it will grind the motor...
Alaska hop under my belt and it did everything I asked.
I unprejudiced returned from the holidays that I got the camera for. 14 days in Alaska. The camera did nearly everything I asked of it. A two points I would like to point out. *I used firmware version 1.0 while on fair, I now see version 1.1 is out, but does not appear to address any of the points I had issue with*I got to work with the video more, and I had very bad chance getting it to focus. However I did notice if I ran the zoom out and THEN turned on the video, it seemed to be able to grab focal point on the subjects much better. Again, doesn't make sense to me, but I will be interested in others that try it and if they have the same experience. I met several folks both traveling with us and at the spaces I visited that own the P500. Shared experiences with others and got some slick pointers from some too. Almost to the person the folks I interacted with were tickled pink to very pleased with this camera. Yes, we all shared some of the same gripes. One of the universal...
    Valid for What it is
I've owned the Nikon p90 and p100, so I've got an notion of what these Nikon superzooms are like. I wasn't planning on buying a new superzoom, but the big jump in zoom to 810mm made me plonk down the bucks again. ( I think I need help, I'm becomeing a camera junkie). While wide angles aren't by something I look for in most cameras, 22.5mm (35mm format) is really wide! The p500 is once again evolutionary, rather than radical. The Good:- Light and easy to hold, which makes it a good travelling camera. Less than half the strain of my dslr with an 18-200mm lens attached.- Tilting 3 inch LCD screen.- Humungous zoom. I make little of before that the Fujifilm HS10 720mm zoom was huge. 810mm is even huger! (This is the zoom range it should have been in the p100 imho, but as they say, outstrip late than never). You will truly see things you'd never thought you'd see when you zoom out to 810mm.- Easy to use...relatively. Since I've...

    P7000: DSLR trait in a P&S package
Let's get the statistics out first. I've been a Nikon shooter for several decades, currently with a D300 (haven't made the leap yet to full frame, but that's next). I'm an amateur, but leap at a pro level. My focus is on music and sports photography, and I like to have a good camera with me when I tour (my last ride-along P&S has been a Lumix DMC-TZ5). I shoot in a variety of conditions, but what I need must a) provides grand quality images, b) be really portable (fits in my purse, can get into concerts that ban DSLRs unless you're shooting on distribution) c) have a longer lens option (200mm is 'table stakes') and d) provide the flexibility to waste time the dials to find the best combo of ISO-aperture-shutter speed for a particular situation. Having HD wherewithal is a nice-to-have.I've been shopping for a new P&S easily for a year. Got interested and then uninterested in the Canon G11/G12/S95 because the lens is too insufficient briefly (even the extenders don't push it out far enough)...
Nikon P7000 absolutely a joy to use!
This is a clever camera if you're looking for an extremely customizable compact camera.Size and Handling -- This extremely just depends on what you are looking for. If you want a pocket camera that can fit into shirt pockets, jean pockets, etc then this is not the camera for you and you exceptionally should look elsewhere. For me, it's the perfect size, not too big and not too small. The camera is solid but not too heavy.Picture superiority -- I shoot mainly in RAW and the quality so far is excellent. Little noise up to ISO400 and usable to ISO800. Can go to 1600 in a economize.Autofocus -- Focus is fast and accurate. There are options for Autofocus, Macro Indistinct, Infinity, and Manual Focus. Be sure to read the manual and spend time expertness the focus options. Some people are reporting focus issues and I believe many are related to users not erudition enough about the focus system.Write speed -- This is where I would have given a 4 1/2 instead...
    Lens Bedding part 2
I purchased this camera for my better half for Christmas. In March while out on a photo shoot of wildflowers the Lens Cover stopped gap fully. Since it was past Amazon's 30 day return window I went to Nikon's Website and set up a recur to repair facility. At this point I was somewhat disappointed but understanding of the fact sometimes things don't go unequivocally correctly and had high expectations of Nikon making things right. I sent off to Nikon(on my dime) and after a few weeks they replied the camera would be repaired under assurance. So far so good. After about a month and a half the camera was returned. The first time we took it out it immediate exhibited the same Lens Include not retracting issue. Now I will have to look forward to sending it back to Nikon (on my dime) and waiting a couple of months for Nikon to "restoration". Not what I expected from Nikon. We have vacation planned for next month and the whole idea of purchasing this camera was to have one which took mark...

L100 - Eminent Camera All Around, Especially for Beginners
After broad research on advanced point-and-shoots that use AA batteries (something I require), I settled on three: the Nikon L100, the Canon Powershot SX10IS, and the Fujifilm s8100fd. So you identify the perspective from which this review is coming, I'm not an experienced photographer but I'm not clueless either. However, this is my first camera more advanced than a central point-and-shoot. So I'll call myself an informed beginner. This is why I chose the L100:COST: The L100 is significantly less overpriced than the SX10IS. The s8100fd's price was comparable to the L100, but I felt that the technology on the L100 was better. Amazon had the most qualified price I could find (besides some sketchy online sellers).TECHNOLOGY: This was a toughy. All three of these cameras have comparable technology (corporealization stabilization, zoom, megapixels, face recognition, scene modes, etc. etc.) and each has one or two unique features that I found very engaging. So this...
    Terrific camera for long-distance shots!
I on the whole purchased this camera because I love my smaller Nikon Coolpix 7600 but wanted something with more zoom. I've only had this camera for about a week, but its clever so far!I do see the "focusing problem" someone was talking about, but its not really a problem...Its just that you can't zoom in too closely on something if you are perpetual close to it - I think this is because of the lens type - its for long distances. But if you choose the macro environment specifically for close-ups, this can also be avoided. When I first got the camera and took it out of the box, I immediately started taking pictures and they weren't prospect out so good, but this was because I didn't know how to make the flash work - you have to raise it by hand - a spry check of the manual revealed this, but I was too anxious in the beginning to stop and read the manual. ;-)Also, I had thank getting used to choosing the different scene settings becuase it doesn't have a...
It DOES use a rechargeable battery-operated!
I kindness I would emphasize the rechargeable battery since Nikon just added it recently and some reviewers were saying the L100 couldn't use a rechargeable mobile. It's a NI-MH battery with recharger. Check the NIKON webpage for the L100 and you will see it listed under "optional accessories". Opinion, I don't like rechargeables because they lose their charge over time and you have to remember to recharge them when you get ready to use your camera. I'd much rather fair-minded pop in a set of alkaline AA's. Then battery cost is about a penny a pic. I can afford that. Here are the reasons I bought this camera. I use it to do terminal-motion shooting in the woods using toy action figures, also on a copy stand to echo greaseboard drawings for animation, and just for general photo shooting. This camera helps because:(1) It has a post-haste bottom and with a triangular footprint which means it will not fall over when you set it down. No tripod needed. I put a flat piece of wood...
