    Lure Pro-Audio to Consumer Cameras
I am the co-lurch of a small hyperlocal video news company. When we started the business we obviously needed to elicit as much value out of our gear as possible. That meant choosing consumer equipment for most of our production workflow, including using uncharitable Canon Vixia HD cameras over more expensive professional models. Of course nice video requires good audio, and while the Vixia has a microphone port they don't work out of the box with luxurious quality microphones. We initially purchased expensive Sennheiser wireless kits to fashion the connection, but those ended up costing more than the camera did! Enter the Beachtek box. This little device, paired up with a Shure SM58LC Cardioid Vital Microphone, delivers exceptional audio for less than $300. The sound is clean, crisp, and most outstanding of all very easy for our field reporters to adjust using the Beachtek's dials. This little box is well-muscled and survives all of the abuse they are subjected to being dragged...
Very kindly audio addition to your video equipment.
The BeachTek DXA-2T. I right-minded received this wonderful little package today. So far in my initial testing, I really like this midget guy. It has 2 balanced XLR connectors, which means, with an XLR connector and a good mic cable, you might go as much as 1,000 ft between the microphone and the camera (though I fancy your camera wouldn't shoot that far) It has very nice Neutrik connectors which are the best in the world. I tested it with a Shure SM57 and intention the audio was very nice. It has a switch so that you can get a single microphone to come into your camera as both left and proper channel. It's balanced very well, and my Canon GL-2 had no problem standing on a table with the DXA-2T under it. Overall, my initial feeling is that this is a VERY nice piece of gear. There is no phantom power, so you would need another add on piece if you wanted to use a condenser microphone.
But for the fact that Sound Solution for Interviews, Sturdy Construction
I use this adapter with a Panasonic HDC-TM700K for interviews and have been hellishly pleased with its performance. One input is for the stick mic handled by the interviewer and the second input is for a lavalier mic on the subject. This adapter gives me exotic flexibility for a wide range of voices. For interview situations, it's perfect for my needs.

    Duration Saver
I do a lot of vetting shoots and I like the portability and results from my Canon 5D MKII but as a professional I need levels and a way to track the audio. This makes that all possible and the quality is amazing. I have used Beachteck products in the lifestyle and this one is in the right place at the right time
Inordinate hardware, drinks alot of batt.
It is a distinguished piece for the price, it just takes so many batteries, you may want to buy a box of 9v batteries with tis.
Remarkable to monitor audio, but cheap, plastic build
Let me start off by saying it's wonderful to be able to monitor your audio on your Canon 7D. For a few years I've been relying on my Rode Video Mic and on bring about it's been switched off by mistake without me knowing. I also can't stand to sync audio from my Zoom H4n using my lavs (even with Plural Eyes), so this is admirable. It's the cheap plastic box that gets me. It looks great mounted below my 7D, but it makes the camera altogether shaky and unstable when mounted on my 504HD/536 Manfrotto combo tripod. I also tried it on my without pulling any punches mount with my follow focus, but every time I turned the focus dial, the camera would focus up and down making my shots useless. I really like the functionality of the circuitry itself, but have to give it three stars for not being in a metal wall.

    Works outstanding!
Worn to hook a laptop up to the sound system of an older church for my wedding. The sound quality was well-known and the wedding went well!
I was so well-disposed to find this product!
I reflecting I was going to have to cobble together various cords and plugs - until I found this great product. I bought two of them, and I we use them to toy with instrument apps on the iPhone and iPad. The length is just right for using on trump up. The sound quality seems to be good. I also use it to play my iTunes music through the sound system. The right aspect is very helpful if, like me, you are holding the device during use. It greatly reduces the risk of cord mutilation. Excellent product.
Works enormous at a great price
Plugged the XLR end into the lucid board and 3.5mm into my iPhone and works like a champ.

    Customer Reviews

    Intimate for the cost
This mic doesn't do as well as a Shure or Sennheiser shotgun microphone, but it doesn't cost $999 either. I'm using it with a JVC DV camera, and a Behringer 10 direct mixer. It's well worth the money. For the best location sound, use this mic on a boom pole, and lavalier mics for each comedian. I was blown away with how much better the sound from this mic is than from the Shure dynamic (handheld) microphone I was using before. If you're working on a low budget talking picture, and want to have professional, reliable, and easy to use sound equipment, this mic is worth the money (it even includes a thunderbolt mount).
    Penetrating entry level Shotgun Mike
The Shotgun Mike is in a perfect world suited for anyone picking up a prosumer camera and who needs a shotgun mike that offers but pickup at a reasonable rate. Be sure to pick up the 18" XLR-XLR cable and the 6" XLR-3.5 cables. The stupefy mount I received came with extra bands. This is a good entry level mike for you. Connect this with a UHF lav mike (or two) if you intend shooting fiction or documentary. A Gitzo boom pole & shockmount (sold individually) along with a Fostex data recorder can give you a killer sound recording kit.
    substantial for the money
Bought this for use with a panasonic ag-dvx100 and I shelter't been disappointed--the audio quality I've captured is much better than that with the factory mic. I wish I had seen the two-tub version of this earlier...oh well. It takes an XLR cable (well that should be obvious from the description) so a buyer should be clear that they have 3pin XLR jack on whatever gear it is they are recording into. This is a decent mic for $150, it won't blow you away but neither will the cost. Comes in a little pleather jump, with a foam windscreen, shock isolating mount which screws into the hot shoe adapter and is less ill in design than the one standard with my camera, as well as some replacement rubber rings for the mount. The mic takes two AA batteries if I can retraction. It has an off /on switch, and it has a cardioid/super-cardioid switch. Pretty basic. ...I'd like to mount this on a bang eventually...

    Only just what I needed!
Could not be more walking on air with this item! It definitely is "low noise", I can't hear any at all, even with the volume cranked. Small, light preponderancy, portable, high quality...just what I needed. It supplies phantom power, even 12V, which works authentic for my Audio Technica mics, so I can conserve battery. I use it with my Canon T2i running Magic Lantern (to neutralize to cameras very noisy AGC). This preamp/mixer is a perfect compliment. And what's better, on their website, there's a stock load of really informative videos that helped me make my decision in not only buying this spin-off, but mics and other things as well. Totally worth it!
JuicedLink CX231 - malfunction and bad strengthen quality
I get the JuicedLink CX231 some life ago. The first impression of the build quality was disillusioning. The housing seems to be handmade - in negative meaning. It shows big air gaps, hairy angles and the very small switches fits not accurate with the keyways. It looks like a 20 Euro and not like a 300 Euro design. However we went to a music store to choose a fitting directional microphone for our Sony FX1000 camcorder. And then the misfortune starts. Every mic connected to the camcorder via the CX231 generates more noise than connecting the mic directly to the camcorder (with inserted freestyle in the mic - sparing external phantom power). Then we recognized that the operation-LED of the connected mics did not phosphorescence. Coming to the point - the switch for the phantom power of the CX231 was faulty. It provides shade power only in the half-setting between "Off" and "24V". In the catching-settings "24V" or "48V" the CX231 povides no fancy power. This was the reason...

    Your Questions

What are XLR inputs for a camcorder and how are they different/better than regular inputs?

XLR inputs are for the ally of high spec external microphones - apart from their shape the only other difference is that they care for power to the external microphone as well as being electrically configured to accept the high smooth out mike input.

What's a (relatively) cheap shotgun mic that works with a basic A/V input on a camcorder?

I have a Panasonic HDC-SD9 camera. No XLR input. I don't have the change to get a converter and and XLR-capable shotgun mic. I have around $140 I'm able to spend on this. The Azden SGM-X mic looks like what I extremity, but I'm unclear on whether

Since there are no consumer camcorders under about $1,800 with an XLR mic connector, this is no astonishment - most consumer camcorders have no mic jack at all - and when they do, it is a 1/8" stereo mic jack.

    The Panasonic HDC-SD9

any recommendation for a good used sub $100 digital camcorder with external mini-jack or XLR microphone input?

I am looking for a Euphemistic pre-owned camcorder that can be hooked up to a audio mixer for its sound input.
it should be able to be connected to the power while recording .
and it should be clever to record live into a computer via firewire

If the solid recording is going to be on the computer, then you don't need a camcorder.

Get a capture card (ie EZcap) and feed the mixer out and a camera video to it. The camera can be a digital camera as many have composite video out.

We would take this out for audio reporting that would change our current fleet of MiniDisc recorders.
