Mediocre IR light
Foreordained the price of this light, it works rather well. It's not too large so it isn't cumbersome, and the price point is good. Could have gone with something more extravagant, but didn't feel like splurging. Works well with my Sony. I think what some people do not identify is that IR lights can only be picked up by TRUE night vision (green screen when recording). If your camera has a night mode, or night environs, that isn't really night vision. Only night vision can actually pick up the IR light. I've seen other similar lights with reviews saying they can't even see when its turned on, and plainly you won't. To the naked eye this light is VERY DIM, however it is suppose to be, our naked eye can not pick up IR light, but the night visions enabled cameras can. All-embracing this light works great and I get quality video when using night mode. This match works as good as you see on the paranormal shows you see on TV. It is a much better value than I had expected.I am using it on a DCR sr82 Sony. Peerless value - know your equipment!
I paid about $30 for this set. It charges fast, works way longer than other lights in this price range, IT DOES Satisfactorily with the bracket to mount it on your tripod threads. A little cheap, but made of metal and quite utilitarian. My camcorder has a widescreen display and you can angle the bracket forward so the light will not hit the screen. I got this so I could record in equitably low-light conditions, the kids, etc. Does what I need for cheap. **To the people who say it has a grassy tint to it. #1 its $30 - go see what a professional color correct light costs, then whimper. #2 Most cameras and camcorders have what is called a "WHITE BALANCE" setting. Auto all things considered does ok, but if you are getting funky colors, manually set it by holding a piece of WHITE stationery in the light you are using, fill the frame and hit 'set' however your camera does it. And presto! The colors should be much more accurate than before. Learn how to use your appurtenances!
First Impressions - Momentous bang for the buck
I righteous got mine a few minutes ago and pulled it out of the packaging. Boy is it light and seems bright to me. I haven't done much testing with it. I have it on the charger now and will give it a workout after I get a full foray on it.As far as the color it seems warmer than most LED lights. I have a few LED lights (round tent camp light and some flashlights) and it is much warmer than them.It feels tinpot and plasticy which it is but it has a clever design. It comes with a mount for a hot shoe and the shoe is all plastic which I like because you don't have to annoy about it shorting out anything on your camera. The bottom of the shoe has a 1/4-20 thread mount too. Granted it is only plastic but the whole fetich is so light I don't see this being a problem. The other three sides on the light have a hot shoe slot (well a non hot shoe, just a shoe). This means that you could steal another light to the Sima or several to create a multi-light setup. One could pick to one side the Sima SL-20LX over a number of what I consider small points. The battery can't be replaced by the user. The element will not function as a light while being charged. The light pattern is definitely hot at about five feet or so and will overexpose your citizen if you don't compensate. They should provide a clip-on diffuser: the light is very bright and will bother people looking sedate at the camera. All those "negatives" and I stil give it 5 stars. Why? Because this much light in such a small package at such a low price is on the association of a miracle, that's why. Even though the close-in light pattern is hot, once you move six or more feet away from your subject, you have a nice role of cool white light that renders color well. It is good out to almost 20 feet. A 2.5 to 3 hour sortie gets you about 1 hour of light. It would nice if you could adjust the output power with a deviate, but you...

Moderate light
I run a paranormal study group in Portland, OR and currently use the SIMA SL-20IR (3 of them), a Sony HVL-IRM and a Sony HVL-IRH2. The best be unearthed of all for illumination is the SIMA but with a short battery life (~45 minutes) and a brutal recharge then (~3 hours) they aren't very practical. Both Sony lights and the Phantom give off either a square or open beam of IR light whereas the SIMA is more of a flood light that illuminates the entire area. However, with the freestyle issues I was looking for a decent light that would do the job.The Phantom runs on a 9-volt with approximately a 12 hour memoirs making it ideal. It is very light and smaller than I expected which is nice. It does emit a pull beam of light but is bright in zero light conditions. I'm still hoping someone can make a stumble as good as the SIMA but with the battery life of the Phantom or Sony lights.I own 3 SIMA lights which adds up to around $110 but all three came with a shelf. A must have for infrared camcorders!
This serviceable little device is perfect for anyone needing a good portable infrared illuminator for use with their IR camcorder. I've only captivated this on one paranormal investigation (so far), but my team and I were all very impressed with the viewable distance as well as the battery life.

Countless Light
I bought a 36 rhizome Night Vision Illuminator (different brand) that lights up the dark perrdy good, but I needed more trifling. I saw the Phantom NV and thought it would be a good idea to try a different company to compare quality.WOW this subject is like a NV spotlight compared to the other one! Strange thing is.. it uses less bulbs. It is more conveinent that is takes a 9V freestyle too. The only down fall is I think they should throw in a mounting bracket for free instead of selling it seperately.Casper

Lets purify the mistery
When I attempted to investigate this product, I could not find any information concerning the adapter measurements, even from the manufacture's website. The only information that I could find was that this adapter could holder up to a 35mm camera using a t-ring adapter. Well I have a Sony mini-DV camcorder and a Sony Cybershot digital camera as well as a Night Owl night vision monocular. The connections are melodious simple, first you need to purchase step rings to fit this adapter to your camera or camcorder. The misterious, well kept incomprehensible, size of the step ring needed to attach to this adapter is a female thread 42mm footstep ring. The step-ring will screw on to the male end of this adapter. From there you can step down or step up to fit the lens on your camera. The other end of this adapter screws into the removable eye mend on the night vision monocular. To adapt from this adapter to my Sony Mini-DV camcorder I had to step down using a 1- 42mm (Womanly thread) to 37mm (Male thread)stepring,...
Will not fit all models
This is in lawsuit anyone ever reads this; two years ago I spent months tracking one of these down, they were scarce even back then. I have a NOCX-5M and the collar perfectly behind the threads is too big for it to screw in. I assumed it was because I had a Marine model with extra sealing/gaskets. I did some scrutiny and several places said a NOCX-3 would work and bought one off Ebay--same problem! I assume they revised the models at some identify b say to have a smaller mounting collar, but I have no idea which ones or how to tell the difference.

This gentle is great! I keep it mounted on my video camera and I never miss a shot due to low light. The light exceptionally improves indoor shots. The IR light is an added bonus for capturing night shots that the built in IR unprejudiced can't reach.

Authentic Video Light but very pricey
Im using this HVL HIRL video unveil with a Sony HC7. Nightshots do get enhanced brightness (though not very much brighter that the unaided HC7 nightshot capability). Having said that, I must reveal that it illuminates a roughly 3 ft (1m) circle more of the surroundings than with an unaided HC7. The visible range video find is not any brighter than a fairly powerful spot light which one can get in Radio Shack / Auto parts retailers.So all in all, its a considerable compact video light but I'd not want to pay anything more than 30-35$ (I shelled out $75+ since I had no clue of how productive it actually is). So my advice, just dont buy unless its below $35.
