The size and weight of the ball heads have been significantly reduced. The pill and fastening are now assembled using a patented bayonet mount. Various accessories can thus be quick mounted to adapt the tripod as required. In addition to the proven, patented Arca-Swiss features, including aspherical pill heads, axial clamping and PMF (progressive motion related friction control), the Z-Series also boasts new intricate developments and optimized materials and coatings. The new series can withstand an incredible 60 kg (132 lbs) off-hinge. Z-Series heads are available as Version Z SP (single pan) and Version Z DP (double pan). True-love it!
I've had two heads in the heretofore. The first was the basic head that came on a cheap tripod that I got when I was a teenager and was really meant to be against with a video camera. The next time around (about 15 years ago) I purchased a Bogen 3021 tripod and what I remembrances would be a very flexible (how can you go wrong with a name like that). The tripod was great and the head was incredibly amenable for setting up for a shot and taking the picture. However, it was not great for shooting anything moving, because It wasn't trusting to track things with the design of the head and it tended to move a bit or settle while tightening it in position. Years afterwards I started reading about tripod heads and specifically tablet heads. After taking a year to decide I bought this one, which I've now owned...

Putrid, smooth ballhead
I bought the Arca-Swiss Z1 ballhead to use in conjunction with the Wimberley Sidekick gimbal. The Sidekick puts a side onus on the ballhead it's used with, loading the weight of the camera, Sidekick and a super-telephoto lens on the ballhead with the chairman flipped over 90-degrees. The Sidekick has vertical panning bearings, but no horizontal panning r, so it relies on the panning function of the ballhead to provide horizontal gimbal action. Hence, the ballhead must be aggressively and have a smooth horizontal panning functions. The Z1 is excellent for this use, offering very high load competency and a smooth panning function separate from the ballhead. When the Sidekick is mounted there's no play in any jet plane. I also use the Z1 for scenic photography and macro. One important need was for me to switch from a body with a super-tele lens to another substance with a wide angle lens in just a few seconds. Everything I wanted in a tripod president
I was on the whole a " hand held" photographer until I injured my arm last year. I've had to switch to being a tripod user and it hasn't been an gentle transition. I got my tripod, but couldn't make up my mind about a head. I researched and asked questions of my photographer friends for a team a few months before buying this tripod head. I went back and forth between the top brands - Kirk, Unqualifiedly Right stuff and this one. I'm not a rich person by any means and to me, this was a big purchase, so I wanted to get it right the first values bright and early so I wouldn't be wishing I had gotten a different head a year from now. Currently I use a Canon Eos Flout XTi. (and a Canon Elan film camera) The heaviest lenses I have are my 100mm macro and my 28 - 135mm so as a matter of fact most any head would do, BUT, if things go as planned, I want to upgrade to a Canon 5D next year, and hope to add a 400mm lens to my bag, so I wanted a crest that would handle that as well as what I have now.
