Prologue As an advanced hobby photographer, I often compete in galleries in my area. I normally shoot with 35mm and compromise format, and I scan the negatives and edit them in Photoshop CS. I hesitantly took the plunge into the faction of digital SLRs several months ago, and the *ist ds exceeded my expectations. Like any camera, you will need to learn how to get virtuous photographs out of it; it won't take them on its own. I print everything on the i9900 Canon large format printer. The following scrutiny should help decide if this camera is for you:Size and Weight The most noticeable advantage of the Pentax is its size and load. I don't have small hands, but the competition makes them too bulky and heavy (some may disagree), sometimes with buttons out of reach. You can program the buttons on digital SLRs to do manifold things, but only the ds has the buttons within reach to be useful when shooting. For instance, the "ok" button can be pressed...
Pentax *ist DS vs Canon vs Nikon
I've had this camera about 4 months now, and I'm more satisfied than ever that I chose this over the Canon (20D) and Nikon (D70) that I tried for several life each.First I didn't even consider the Canon Rebel (other than picking it up for a few moments at the store). The Insurgent is cheaply built plastic, and feels like toy. I'm sure it's more durable than it feels, but if I had bought the Revolutionary, I would have regretted it every time I picked it up. Plus, why would you buy one when the Pentax is available for about the same price, and the Pentax feels much more like a able camera should.I tried the Canon 20D and Nikon D70 for several days each before deciding to buy the Pentax. Contented to be back with Pentax
My first three digital cameras were Canon. I still own a Canon G3, but when the ist DS came out I was interested.I did my delve into on the Canon Rebel and the Nikon D70 and the Pentax and after all was said and done I chose the Pentax! I am very happy with the camera.It is much smaller judge than the others and seems very solid. Pentax lenses are also cheaper than similar Canon and Nikon lenses (You are paying for their publicity efforts). Also Pentax lenses from 30 years ago can be used with this camera.Pictures thus far are the best and I work with it each day. I enter many photo contests and this camera holds it own!

Rokinon, Samyang, Vivitar, Opteka, etc.
I have the Rokinon form of this lens. It is great! I use it on a Nikon D700 and have compared it with the Nikon AF 85mm f/1.4 (which I had rented for a weekend to proof) and I much prefer this lens to the Nikon.When I used the Nikon AF version, I found myself having to manually meet to get the plane of focus just where I wanted it and so decided I really didn't need to pay supplemental (almost a $1k more) for the AF feature. So the only thing that would make sense for paying more was if the Nikon's Image Quality was significantly bettor... it wasn't. In fact, at f/1.4 (which is where you will be shooting this lens 99% of the time, else why buy an f/1.4 lens) I found the Rokinon/Opteka to be sharper and have more set than the Nikon.There are a lot of reviews to be found on the inter-net for this lens. I had extraordinarily never heard of this company or their lens until I happened upon a few web threads from various forums, specifically fredmiranda and dpreview.After seeing some astounding images posted from owners of pretty much every camera brand and seeing great bokeh and sharpness resemblance shots, I knew I had to get one.Just got it today (April 13) and it's awesome, awesome, horrifying, especially given the price.I'm using my lens on a D700.----OPTICS - Outstanding. I bought my first DSLR camera, a Pentax IST DS, not too yearn ago. Going over the manual, I read that you aren't allowed to use pictures taken with the camera for anything other than particular enjoyment. Why is this? I mean, I bought the camera.
You misread, or stopped halfway through it. It says:
"Images bewitched with the ist DS that are for anything other than personal enjoyment cannot be used without permission according to the rights as specified in the Copyright Act."
