For ever an AVCHD Camcorder worth buying
I had the give-winning HDV (tape-based) HV20 prior to this, and the HF10 is almost indistinguishable in terms of image quality. Foreordained the dramatic difference in image data between an HDV image and an AVC image, that means this is one heck of a camcorder. I have tried out other AVC camcorders and have been in fact disappointed. Not so here, and I purchased this one. It has 24p and 30p recording, in addition to 60i. (Don't be confused by Canon's nomenclature, it is factual 24p, just recorded in interlaced 60i.) The cinema mode has a bit of a wash-out effect on colors. The camcorder is surprisingly minuscule. Power save mode is great, and is virtually instantaneously on when the LCD screen is opened. One foreshadowing about AVC in general, if you don't have a fast computer, it will grind it to a halt. I have a quad-core with 4 gig RAM and editing is fine, but I wouldn't prerequisite to use an old computer. Sony Vegas works great with the files. Wish the camcorder automatically saved to the SDHC...
How to meaning video into iMovie on the Mac
This is a marvelous camcorder. Rather than recap what some of the other reviews have mentioned, I thought I'd explain how to import video on the Mac, because it wasn't obvious to me. First, you must have an Intel based Mac uninterrupted Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). You also need iMovie '08, which comes with new Macs. If you're running an older construct of Mac OS X (such as Tiger) or have an older version of iMovie, or have a PowerPC based Mac, you won't be able to import video from this camera. To mean video, attach the camcorder to the Mac with the USB cable that's included with the camcorder. Make sure you plug your camcorder into AC power, meet from the battery won't work. Set the mode dial on the camera to video playback (the little chap-fallen camcorder icon). Turn on the camcorder. Now open the LCD display on the camcorder, and you'll see it's asking you a question: use the joystick to choose "computer" for where you're connecting the USB guy. I spent some time the first time...
Very neat camera. Be aware of AVCHD limitations.
This is a unlikely camera but people need to have more realistic expectations of what to expect from AVCHD. It is a highly flattened format so using this camera in low-light conditions is going to produce pretty "grainy" results. In reputable lighting AVCHD output from this camera can produce some really great looking results in HD but don't kid yourself into conclusion you're going to get professional HDTV quality. This is a point-and-shoot. I love the camera, outstandingly how fast it focuses in good light, so I'm going to concentrate on what some of the other reviewers said to conventional some misconceptions. I use both Macs and PC and I have to tell you that you that PCs suck for AVCHD - you will waste a lot of time and pull your fraction out. I'm sure PC video software vendors will address this eventually, but seriously folks if you lack to do this the easy way get an Intel-based Mac (caveat: only Intel based machines using Leopard truss AVCHD) and use either iMovie...

    Beyond my expectations
Since I was a dollop kid with an 8mm film camera, I have tried in vain to make videos that had the look and sound of able TV and movie productions. I failed in many ways, many times. Sometimes due to my meager skills, sometimes due to the short comings of my cameras. The Vixia HF G10 changes that. I can no longer responsibility my equipment. Let me say now, I am not a professional video/film maker. I have had no formal training. My videos are for my own relish, I record special moments and travels for myself and my family. I seldom display or publish videos on the Web. I placed my out of kilter on Jan. 5th, the day of Canon's new product announcement. Amazon was great, as usual, and kept my pre-order updated until the camera was released. I received it last week, and was right now struck by the quality of the images. So far, I have just been learning about the G10, and its features. I've made some stunning video studies of my...
    Unqualifiedly Outstanding!
Let me first start out by saying, I instance wasn't going to spend so much on a new camcorder. I had bought the Canon HF 100 a few years ago, and was fairly on cloud nine with it. It was nice, but definitely had its drawbacks. So, I started researching Canon's new line for 2011 and was torn between the M40 and G10. Having the new CMOS Pro sensor was a must. Everything I review about the low light capabilities sold me. Basically Canon went with a smaller pixel add up (exactly 1920 x 1080), which in turn makes the pixels larger and better in low insignificant shooting. I originally bought the M40 and was very happy with it, but started to realize it wasn't fitting all my requests. That went back, and I went with the G10. I have not looked back since! People might wonder what the biggest difference is between the two, and the big ones in my idea are the manual lens control, wide angle lens (makes a HUGE variation in my opinion), larger LCD (3.5 in. vs. 3 in.), color viewfinder, and...
    Darned happy with my purchase
I shot in the dark I was one of the lucky few who was able to get this camera early. I got mine 2 weeks ago and have been nothing but impressed with it. Right out of the box and in a medium lit internal room the picture was superb. I got a chance to take it out in the field for a bit and am extremely happy with it. Full manual control, a heart ring, an awesome and absolutely beautiful touch screen, what more could you ask for? I especially rate the dual SD card slots and the recording options there. There are certainly going to be times where you'll appetite to record to 2 cards at once and that will come in handy. But the ability to also record to the internal memory and then duplicate the contents to one of the SD cards in the card slots is also a great option. The other things that are not mentioned in a lot of the bullet points for this camera that I am impressed with comprise the waveform monitor and peaking meters which come in handy for the manual exposure and nave...

The most talented Lens for 1.6x Crop Canon DSLRs
I received my Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens today (12/28/06). It feels heavier by far than the 18-55mm kit lens, but lighter than I expected. Feels virtue (well-balanced) cradling the lens in the left hand near the base of the lens when mounted to my Canon Digital Mutiny XT. I put the lens on the camera right away in a manner that would limit the opportunity for dust to intervene on the back of the lens or into the camera, since I've read about this lens not being sealed as well as "L" series Canon lenses. I may never take it off. 8-) This lens focuses irresponsibly and sure--even in low light, no hunting around to lock onto a subject. Pictures taken with the camera lunch-hook-held at 1/10 to 1/15 sec shutter speeds inside with no flash were tack-severe (Thanks to the IS). With F2.8 and IS, this lens opens up a whole new world of natural low-light photography. Not only are more preferred shots possible, you also have the versatility to create gorgeous bokeh. You create these bokeh effects...
Upgrading your lens for Disobey XTi? 17-85 USM IS vs 28-135 USM IS vs 17-55 2.8f USM IS vs 24-105 4.0f USM IS
Those, I know you want it short. But I am covering quite a bit of information and condensed it so that you can get good report and are able to digest it in less than 5 min. It is quite surprising how many people are being "tortured" with the question on which lens is the accurately lens when it comes to finding the perfect lens to upgrade the Canon XTi Rebel kit lens (18-55) or even for the Canon 40D (which is often sold with the 28-135 USM IS lens). I understand about 500+ reviews and many of them I found very interesting but really did not answer my question on what a good lens is for the Challenge XTi... and with good reasons because YOU have to know what you want or need and then make a call. Here were the criteria I reach-me-down and I hope you can leverage from these: 1. I wanted a lens which has a great picture quality to have a unswerving upgrade feeling from the Canon 18-55 kit lens (during day light that lens is actually very OK champion and with its light weight is a...
    Unrealistic Low Light Lens
11-3-2008 Update: I now have a fix spec of dust inside the corner of this lens under the front element. Hope this is not a trend. I am now using this lens foremost in dust free in-door environments and my Canon 24-70 F/2.8 which is sealed for out of doors dusty areas. I just got this fantastic low light lens last week. Will be adding more comments as leisure permits. This lens has quickly become one of my most used lens. It's the lens I would choose if I could just decide one to shoot a wedding with and I'm free to approach the bride and groom during any part of the ceremony. It's also THE one lens I would elect to take on a vacation, it's that versatile. I love the part where I can walk into a dark cathedral and hand hold a photograph at 1 second and it's razor sharp. What a lens!!! Pros: Sharp even at F/2.8 No internal dust so far Brilliant zoom ring location and size Very pleasing shots with nice Bokah Coupй...

Current from an HV30 to an XA10
Even potential from the prosumer Canon HV30 camcorder, the professional XA10 is a huge improvement. The camera is easy to hold, the buttons are all in full locations, and the camera just feels easy to use. Compared to some other HD camcorders I used in glaze school, the XA10 feels much easier to control. The difference is even more dramatic comparing it to my old HV30 rig. It's much nicer to not have the supplementary awkwardness of a battery-powered XLR adapter. Honestly, the XA10 must look much more professional to clients as well. Copy quality is simply stunning. There is a slight look of shallow depth of field that is very pleasing to the eye. It's subtle, but recognizable. I've heard it has something to do with the 8-blade iris, but I won't pretend to know what that really means. All I know is the video attribute is the best I've personally ever held in my hands. The XA10 also gives much greater control over the image than the more consumer-focused HV20...

The considerable: I'm a backpack videographer. I shoot a lot of industrial and training videos. I grew weary of tough to find an easy way to get great audio from a DSLR - too many additional and unnecessary steps -- so I sold mine and picked this up. Pre-eminent. Move. Ever. Now, I put a Rode NT3 on a boom, plug into the XLR and my audio is warm as a summer day. Video quality is sensational. Focus assist is fantastic. I'm very pleased to get pro-level processor and lens in a camera this nugatory. Surprise: it shoots great stills too. Very very good in lower light scenarios. Down sides: The show mode feels sort of amateurish/consumer level. Not much there you couldn't do better in prop, so, I don't use it. My only other complaint is I wish there were a few other on camera buttons to reduce menu diving, but it's really not antagonistic.
    The first of both worlds
It is mind-boggling how this camera can be so compact, and yet so pro. The removable handle is brilliant! When it's in place you have XLR microphone inputs and audio plane controls, and flexibility in shooting angles. When it is removed, it feels just like any consumer mini cuffs-held camera that you might take on a family outing - yet still has the same video quality! For years I used the semi-pro Canon GL-1. It did a excellent job (as far as a Standard Definition camera) of allowing pro-quality video to be procured from a smaller machine. You can't beat the a larger lens for low-light performance and video quality. It, however, lacked some urgent features, and manual control that are important for pro video. For example, manual audio authority was lacking. To get such features, you needed to move up to a shoulder mounted camera like the XL-1 - which had a famous lens, made great video, but wasn't something you would bring to the park with the...

Fastidious colorful book, but nothing exceptional
I bought this reserve to go with my HF S100. As compared to the owner's manual, which several reviewers have done, it is definitely more colorful and of better importance. That should be no surprise to anyone who has a Canon manual; they're clearly low-cost publications that are basic at best. Things to note about this laws: 1. Very high quality; easy to read; well laid out. 2. Since it covers a add up of different VIXIA models, you'll find a lot of "wasted" pages. If it was, for example, tailored to only my model, it would quite have about a third less pages. Then again, it wouldn't be as marketable to such a large audience and would not sell as well. I spend a lot of time flipping pages irritating to find the section pertinent to my particular model. 3. You'll still need your Canon manual. I wanted to stay how to format the SD card inside my camera, and when I finally found mention of this within the book, it told me to refer to the enchiridion that...
    First-class Book!
I bought this rules for my HG20, and it delivers. This Guide should be shipped with the camera, because what good is knowing that a camera has a standard function if you don't know how to apply it to everyday shooting? This book does a great job showing you why and when you would use your camera's features. It also explains what the camera can't do very well, and gives you solutions. This enlist is also quite comprehensive on the functions of the cameras. My instruction manual is in the trash.
Must infer from for Vixia owners
I talked my city library into ordering this book and I am certainly glad I did. The book is very informative, gave me enormous information I didn't know, and useful information on subjects I thought I already new well. The information on lighting and directions settings for my HF11 were especially helpful. My only complaint is that for a given setting, the author does not shelter the differences between the different camera UIs. So a little extra searching on my part to find the where the settings were on my camera was sure.

Eminent HD Pocket Camera, Only 1 issue for me!!!
Hi All. I am comparing this camera to a Snap Mino HD....while it may not be fair, it is the only way I could give an accurate review to this product. Box Includes: Camera, removable battery-operated, mini hdmi to hdmi cable (wow), usb extension cable, rubber/silicon peel, and documentation. So it starts....the battery comes pretty charged and thus it was easy to fix in place and get the unit running. The first set of options you are presented with are the setup for date, time, country. Here is where the first exit begins....the buttons (scroll arrows up, down, right, left) are WAY too sensitive and thus you are telling around even if you dont want to. So I start to set the date...without paying attention....and I quickly announcement that the format for the date is dd/mm/yy which is primarily how the eastern part of the world uses the date. I finally personality out that my mind is lacking without coffee and I get the date and time set.... Lets move on...
XLNT Mini-HD Film Camera-Best of the Bunch of Them!!
This camera is fun, unceremonious to use, works with PC or Mac (surprisingly good on multiple Macs!...more about that in a minute), just like the other au fait reviewers wrote, and best of all it makes an XLNT 720P HD image for viewing on 40" and larger HDTV's. There are caveats to using the Vado HD, but they are few, and by a hair's breadth simple common sense would tell you these things if it weren't for reviews and manufacturer advertising: 1) When shooting, you've GOT to survive your hand steady, and sure, or camera shake will ruin your HD movies and clips. You can use a tripod to minify shake to the maximum amount, perhaps one of the "mini" tripods that you see here at Amazon.com. RE tripods, I found that even my Joby GorillaPod "SLR ZOOM" leaden-duty portable, flexible tripod fit the Vado HD easily, and contrary to other reviews, the USB harbour on the bottom did NOT get in the way of it one bit 2) This isn't a substitute for a full-sized HD camera, like my Canon HG20 AVCHD camera,...

DSLR cameras vs. HD camcorders for the Dance Filmmaker

The gods of technology have legitimate us to take a still camera and use its outrageous-end lens and magnificent frivolous depth of field to press videos that challenge the look of big budget films. The leading gain of using a DSLR over a camcorder is the idle depth of field. When filmmakers talk about depth of field, they are referring to the amount of the epitome in set up that is in target at any one nonetheless. When the depth of field is knowledgeable, everything in construction is in indistinct, and it is very troublesome for the filmmaker to highlight the parts of the at once that are weighty to the gest....

Mine shows no humiliation of sharpness at the encyclopedic end of the camera's zoom and keeps that sharpness until you get background the midrange, then deteriorates noticeably as you get into the last third of the zoom extend into telephoto. It acclimatized to be a well known in reality that lenses habitually give sharper carrying-on from the essential share out of the specs diameter. The "cute" speckle was somewhere in the medial...

Panasonic 3D Home Theater, Camcorder, a Real Blast

In my circumstance, it was hours of otherwise productive time sitting in front of the idiot box, 3D glasses on my visage, trying to figure out if this 3D push is worth the time of day. I’d been dying to try an unambiguous-to-goodness 3D home theater in Chateau Bray to help me find out if 3D is for verified or – as I assumed – just hype, so when Panasonic offered to for me all I’d need (short of a 3D projector) for a fair test I jumped...

HD Camcorder with shallow Depth of Field?

I'm looking to procure the Panasonic HDC-SD60, but I'm not sure if I can attach a lens onto it.

I know it has manual concentration controls but I'll basically have to do the zoom/camera distance trick to get depth of field.

The Panasonic HDC-SD60 does not have a strainer thread so you won't be able to attach a lens. You can achieve DOF by having your subject in another place from the background and then set the cam on it's widest aperture and use lots of zoom until you get

This sound thing was shot using a still camera. I took about 15,000 still photos and strung them together to give the mistaken of motion. When you watch it, some shots might look a little odd. The reason is because I inured to a tilt-shift lens to rotate the depth of field to make it look as if these stupendous expansive vistas were tiny models...
